Jelena Prljević
Jelena Prljević (b. 1990 in Serbia) is New York based artist whose practice is grounded in the intersections of drawing, animation, and installation. Growing up in Serbia during the dissolution of Yugoslavia has led Prljević to seek a deeper understanding of the cultural relationships, traditions, and customs that surround her. For Prljević, “drawing became a search to re-imagine the world and illustrate a fragmented understanding of the whole.” Prljević holds a BFA from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, Serbia and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Connecticut, USA. In Prljević’s practice, time is both a process and medium. Her drawings serve as invocations of place and reflections of her transitional experiences, and the amalgamation of Prljević’s drawings and animations functions as a record of the waxing and waning of her own observations and interests. Simultaneously documentary and sentimental, Prljević’s works transform experienced narratives into visualized fragments of time, memory and motion.
